शुभ प्रभात ( Good Morning)

"ब्रह्म मुहूर्त (Brahma Muhurat)" is the time when it is said that Gods are supposed to be most active and praying and meditating during this time is supposed to be very deep and most fruitful.
Usually when we wakeup, we are already late, having shut alarm at least 3-4 times, so we just hurriedly come out of the bed and start running and this run continues till we again come back to the bed in the night and go into deep rest (I mean sleep :-) ).

The state when we have partially woken up, is supposed to be like a meditative state, so don't hurriedly get up and run, just relax and slowly and gradually come out of the state, it will make your day more relaxing.
In olden days when people used to wakeup, first they used to pray with their eyes closed and then first thing which they would do was to see their palms and while looking at their palms they used to chant.

"Karaagre Vasate Lakshmi Karamadhye Sarasvati,
Karamuule Tu Govinda Prabhaate Karadarshanam,
Samudravasane Devi Parvatastanamandale,
Vishhnupatni Namastubhyam Paadasparsham Kshamasva Me"

Meaning: The front part of the hands (the finger tips) is credited to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. The middle part or palm is credited to Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of learning and the root (the part of hand near the wrist) to Govinda. So, every morning, one should have a reverent look at one's hand which represents sincere labor. I bow to Mother Earth, who has mountains and jungles on her body and whose clothing is made by the ocean. The wife of Lord Vishnu, please pardon me for touching you with my feet.

How beautiful are all these slokas we have in our tradition and how deep is the meaning in them, we need to just wakeup and explore, infinity is nowhere but between those words.

A fresh breath of… Ayurveda

Life has four characteristics: it exists, evolves, expresses and extinguishes. And for these, it depends on five elements: the earth, water, air, ether and fire. These correspond to the five senses: sight, smell, taste, sound and touch.

Ayurveda is the study of life — Veda means to know and Ayur is life. According to Ayurveda, life or existence is not rigid compartments — it is a harmonious flow. Even the five elements are not tight compartments of defined objects — they flow into one another. Each one of the elements contains the other four. So, the approach of Ayurveda towards life is holistic.

The subtlest element in us is space, which the mind is made up of, and the grossest element is the earth, which our bones, skin and body structure are made up of. To understand the physiology, its characteristics and its reflection on the mind, the human system is divided into three Doshas or imbalances: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

When an illness arises, it manifests first in the thought form, which is the subtlest aspect, and then in the sound form. Thereafter it manifests in the light form, that is, in the aura. It is only then that the illness manifests itself in the body. To begin with, simple symptoms arise in the fluid form, which can be eradicated, and then only they manifest in the grossest form, where they need medication. In aromatherapy, an illness can be cured just through fragrance. It is mostly focussed on the preventive aspect.

The holistic approach of Ayurveda includes exercising, breathing and meditation. Breath is synonymous to life. For all practical purposes, if someone is not breathing, that's the sign that there is no life there.

It is very interesting to notice the relationship between breath and the three Doshas in the body. These Doshas affect certain parts of the body more than the others. For example, Vata Dosha is predominant in the lower part of the body — stomach, intestine etc. Diseases like gastric problems and joint aches are caused due to this. Kapha Dosha is predominant in the middle part of the body. Cough is mainly a result of Kapha imbalance. Pitta affects the upper part of the body i.e., the head — short temper is a sign of Pitta.

In the breathing techniques, the three-stage pranayama has effect on these three Doshas. Among different breathing techniques, there are specific breathing exercises for lower, middle and upper parts of the body. After the three-stage pranayama, you would feel that the Doshas in your body have altered. Something in the body changes; you no longer feel the same, you feel more balanced. The pranayama brings that balance in the system. Once you get in the rhythm of the pranayama, you will find the balance setting in. Making it a habit is difficult, but not the practice itself. Definite rhythms or breathing patterns correct these Doshas and bring the balance to the connected parts of the body. You can also find the three Doshas in our fingers and the nerve endings. For example, the index finger is Kapha; the middle finger is Vata, and the ring finger, Pitta. You can discern the Doshas running in the body by the shape of someone's fingers. Practice of Mudra pranayamas, i.e., gently pressing the nerve endings in the fingertips in a subtle way and breathing with the Ujjayi breath, also balances the Doshas in the body.

How to bring good health to a system? First, attend to the ether element that is the mind element. If your mind is clogged with too many impressions and thoughts, it is draining you of your resistance power and is preparing your body for some illness. If the mind is clear, calm, meditative and pleasant, the resistance in the body increases. It would not allow an illness to come into the body. Thus, the first remedy is to calm down the mind, provided by the ether. Then come to the air element, the breathing. Aromatherapy depends on this element. And then light — the colour therapy. You can see an illness in the aura of a person before it manifests in the body. Some physicians have done research on the aura photography, especially in cases of ulcers, cancer and diabetes. They took photographs six months before these diseases could manifest in the body and found some spots. By energising our system with the prana — life energy or breath — you can clear the aura and prevent the illness before it comes. That is what yoga does. Patanjali, in the Yoga Sutras, says that the purpose of yoga is, “Stopping the sorrow before it arises.”

And then, come to the water element. Fasting with water, purifying the system with water can bring a balance in the system. And final recourse, of course, is different medicinal herbs, medicines and surgery. All these come when everything else fails or when we neglect these other steps; then it becomes inevitable.

Our breath has a lot of secrets to offer to us, because for every emotion in the mind, there is corresponding rhythm in the breath. And each rhythm affects certain part of the body physically. Observing the great correlation between these sensations, the level of body and moods of the mind is meditation.

Have you observed the sensation you experience when someone praises you? Or, when you feel happy looking at a sunset or are meeting someone very close and dear to you? You feel a sense of expansion of mind, of consciousness. Though we do feel that happiness and the sensation is happening, we fail to notice the connection. It is because our attention is on that object, not on the sensation. And when you are miserable, there is a sensation of contraction. Somewhere you feel tight and tense inside; there is a contraction of the consciousness — that's misery, sorrow. Knowledge is, knowing that which expands. What is this something in this body which is expanding and contracting, which is feeling happy or feeling miserable, which is expressing and which is experiencing, which is evolving and which is moving through the events? This knowledge, this enquiry is the study of consciousness, of life, of prana, of Ayurveda.

Breathing is the first act of life and this is also the last act of life. In between, though we are breathing in and out forever, we do not attend to the breath. If you attend to the breath, you'll find that in one minute we breathe nearly sixteen to seventeen times. If you are upset you may go up to twenty; if you are extremely tense and angry, maybe twenty-five breaths per minute. But if you are calm, pleasant and happy, you will breathe ten times; and if you are in deep meditation, then only two breaths or three.

If you observe an infant and its breathing pattern, you will be amazed how balanced it breathes. Infants breathe from all the three sections of the body. Their breath goes very deep, and as they breathe in, their belly comes out; as they breathe out their belly moves in. But more nervous and tense you are, you will do the reverse. You don't have to go to a school or learn these things from anybody. If your mind is very keen and observant, then you learn a lot just observing people, children and the nature around. But our mind is preoccupied with so many things, judgements, opinions and impressions that we are unable to observe and perceive the refined things in nature.

RakshaBandhan

Relationships are the essence of celebration. This holds true for any Indian festival. Each festival brings the families and society together. That mere togetherness is celebration. The celebration of one such relationship is Raksha Bandhan; the celebration of brother sister relationship. The sibling relationship is nowhere so celebrated as in India. The brother sister relationship is no where so worshiped as here. It is this affection and love that is celebrated on the Raksha Bandhan.

Raksha Bandhan is a festival celebrating the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. The day when the siblings pray for each others' well being and wish for each others' happiness and goodwill. As the name 'Raksha Bandhan' suggests, 'a bond of protection', Raksha Bandhan is a pledge from brothers to protect the sister from all harms and troubles and a prayer from the sister to protect the brother from all evil. The festival falls on the Shravan Purnima (full moon day of shravan month) which comes generally in the month of August. The sisters tie the silk thread called rakhi on their brother's wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters. This festival which is unique to India creates a feeling of belongingness and oneness amongst the family and society.

Guruji's Message
Today is the day of commitment and upholding that. Commitment of coming together, not against any enemy but for love and sharing joy. There are various strengths which every person has, be it bodily, mental, emotional or spiritual and today is the day to become aware of our strength and using that to protect others.
Bondage doesn't allow us to grow, it stiffles us and to come out of such bondage we have to take a different kind of bondage(bandhan), one which is full of love and knowledge and thus the significance of rakshabandhan.
Also, women should not feel that they are not strong, even though they may not be physically as strong as men but definitely they have higher mental strength, India has always been a place which has treated women with reverance and respect, we always say "Radhe-Shyam, Siya-Ram, matradevobhav (मातृ देवो भव)", so today is the day to realise the strength within us and use that to spread love and knowledge to everyone and not just keep it limited to ourselves.

Origins
The origin of Rakshabandhan from Vedas specifically the Bhavishaya Purana (137/20), which explains that once Lord Vishnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, after King Bali’s surrendered unto Him, promised the king that He would personally guard his kingdom in the Sutala planet, which is situated in the lower planetary systems. Later Laxmidevi, while looking for Lord Vishnu, arrived in Sutala planet on Shravan Purnima. She accepted King Bali as her brother by tying a ‘raksha’ on him. In return, Bali asked her to wish for a boon. She requested Lord Vishnu’s return. However, the Lord had pledged to eternally protect King Bali. To resolve his dilemma, Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva agreed to guard King Bali for four months each, while Lord Vishnu would guard him for the auspicious four months known as Chaturmasaya. The festival of Rakshabandhan commenced when Laxmidevi tied the ‘raksha’ on King Bali.

The Bhavishaya Purana also cites a story about the great battle between devas (demigods) and danavas (demons). In the battle the devas, headed by King Indra, was defeated. Indra, humbled and crest-fallen, sought the advice of Brihaspati, the Guru of the demigods. The sage told him to bide his time, prepare himself and then march against his adversary. He also indicated that the auspicious moment for sallying forth was the Shravan Purnima. As the devas prepared to fight again, Sachidevi, King Indra’s wife took a thread, charged it with sacred verses or mantras for protection and tied it on Indra’s hand. Through the strength of this thread Indra conquered his enemies re-established his sovereignty. Since then till today this festival is celebrated.

Independence Day

Independence, have we ever thought what it means, it means experiencing total freedom in spite of whatever activities we are doing and also sharing this freedom with as many people as possible.
One more year has passed by and we will again go into deep slumber within couple of hours of celebrations getting over.

This day when our nation got independence has become a day of vacation and enjoyment for all of us. We send each other messages "Happy Independence Day" et AL, but do we really mean it?
Can we just take couple of minutes from our busy schedule and ponder on what has happened to our nation in last 61 years of Independence, are we progressing, regressing or digressing ?

15th August is not just another holiday or a day to lazy around, it is a day to pay tribute to all those people, even whose names we don't know, who sacrificed their life for our country. Let's get out of this rigmarole of formalities and take some commitment for the coming year. Just close your eyes for a minute and think what this country has given you, what is the current state of India and what can you do to make a difference ?

Are we so useless that we can't make an iota of difference in the society, which we are part of ....
I request you to come out of this sleep, the whole country is being taken for a ride by a group of people who are only concerned about their own interests, if we don't plan a "RDB" Rang De Basanti kinda action sooner, our nation will soon be on verge of going back into pre-independence era.

Let this Independence Day bring a new lease of life in all of us, so that we can work towards building a great nation and bring real prosperity and independence for our mother India.
Jai Hind !!

The Phenomenon - Michael Phelps

Michael Fred Phelps (born June 30, 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American swimmer who holds world records in several events. Phelps won eight medals (six gold, two bronze) at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, which tied the record for most medals at one Olympics, a record set by Alexander Dityatin in 1980.Phelps' international titles, along with his various world records, have resulted in him being named World Swimmer of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and American Swimmer of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Phelps has qualified to compete in eight swimming events at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and is attempting to beat Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at one Olympics, and the lifetime record of nine Olympic golds. As of today Phelps has won three gold medals in Beijing, all in world record time, and he became one of only five athletes to win nine Olympic gold medals (others being Larissa Latynina, Carl Lewis, Mark Spitz and Paavo Nurmi) and by the end of this Olympics he will probably be the person with highest number of individual Gold medals at the age of 23 only.

Background: In his youth, Phelps was diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He started swimming at age 7, partly because of the influence of his sisters and partly to provide him with an outlet for his restless energy. He blossomed quickly as a swimmer, and by the age of 10 held a national record for his age group. More age group records followed, and Phelps' rapid improvement culminated in his qualifying for the 2000 Summer Olympics at the age of 15.

Message: Children are immensely talented and have high energy levels, as adults and parents if we just recognize it and direct there energy into a proper channel, then the day would not be far when we will have people breaking records in all spheres of life. When youth don't know what to with their energy and enthusiasm, they get carried away into drugs, bad behavior, suicides, criminal activities, which troubles them, their near and dear ones and the whole society.
Spend time with children, they need you more than the video games, cartoons and other stuff which you offer them.
If you want to know how to deal with children, there is a beautiful program called KYC (Know Your Child) offered by Art of Living's SSRVM team, it is couple of hours program, which provides lots of wonderful insights and helps to provide proper upbringing to our children.

PS: There are other course for youth which I will describe in future posts.

Indian Golden Boy - Bindra

Yesterday morning I switched on the TV just before I was ready to leave for office and what followed was just incredible which forced me to just sit glued in front of the TV for an hour or so, the moment he got on podium and our flag started getting hoisted and national anthem started, it was just out of the world, atleast for me.

This post itself tells what Abhinav Bindra has achieved. I am a total cricket buff and also have interests in lawn-tennis, football, F-1, badminton and TT. For long I was thinking of putting a post on Sachin Tendulkar but due to some reasons it was getting delayed ... and now before putting a post on him I had to put Bindra here.
No Indian has been able to achieve what Bindra has done by getting Gold Medal at Olympics. For some moments I was just blank, which tells what has been the magnitude of this effort. God bless this guy. It was a moment of redemption for India. The global media looked bemused as grownup Indians danced like little children, shedding tears of joy. How can they understand ? This moment ended decades of Olympic misery for India, the world's second most populous nation and a perennial underachiever at the games.

Hope this will result in people taking notice of various other sports in our country other than cricket.

Meditate upon this ... it is out of this world !

Guru Gyaan

*1. QUIT WORRYING:*

Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry.

Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry themfor you? Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way?

*2. PUT IT ON THE LIST:*

Something needs done or taken care of. Put it on the list. No, not YOURlist. Put it on MY to-do-list. Let ME be the one to take care of the problem. I can't help you until you turn it over to Me.

And although My to-do-list is long, I am after all... God. I can take care of anything you put into My hands. In fact, if the truth were ever reallyknown, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize.

*3. TRUST ME:*

Once you've given your burdens to Me, quit trying to take them back.

Trust in Me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Problems with the kids? Put them on My list.Problem with finances? Put it on My list. Problems with your emotional roller coaster? For My sake, put it on My list.
I want to help you. All you have to do is ask.

*4. LEAVE IT ALONE:*

Don't wake up one morning and say, "Well, I'm feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here." Why do you think you are feeling stronger now? It's simple. You gave Me your burdens and I'm taking care of them.

I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace. Don't you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started? Leave them with Me and forget about them. Just let Me do my job.

*5. TALK TO ME:*

I want you to forget a lot of things. Forget what was making you crazy.

Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I'm in control. But there's one thing I pray you never forget. Please, don't forget to talk to Me - OFTEN! I love YOU! I want to hear your voice. I want you to include Me in on the things going on in your life.I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with Me. I want to be your dearest friend.

*6. HAVE FAITH:*

I see a lot of things from up here that you can't see from where you are.

Have faith in Me that I know what I'm doing. Trust Me; you wouldn't want the view from My eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust Me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so
much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be?

*7. SHARE:*

You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement.

Share your laughter with those who haven't heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none.

*8. BE PATIENT:*

I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much.

How can you be so impatient then when it takes Me a little longer than you expect to handle something on My to-do-list? Trust in My timing, for My timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush.

*9. BE KIND:*

Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for My sake.

I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please, know I love each of your differences.

*10. LOVE YOURSELF:*

As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself? You were created by me for one reason only -- to be loved, and to love in return. I am a God of Love. Love Me. Love your neighbors. But also love yourself.

It makes My heart ache when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong. You are very precious to me, Don't ever forget.

Naiharva Hum Ka Na Bhave - Kabir Song

Naiharva Hum Ka Na Bhave
Sai Ki Nagri Param Ati Sundar,
Jahan Koi Jav Na Avey
Chand Suraj Jahan, Pavan Na Pani,
Ko Sundesh Pahunchave
Dard Yeh Sai Ko Sunave
Agey Chalo Panth Nahin Sujhe,
Peeche Dosh Lagawe
Kehi Bidhi Sasure Jau Mori Sajani,
Virha Jor Jarawe
Vishai Ras Nach Nachawe
Bin Satguru Apno Nahin Koi,
Jo Yeh Rah Batawe
Kahat Kabira Suno Bhai Sadho,
Supne Na Pitam Awey
Tapan Yeh Jiya Ki Bujhawey

Explanation:
In this song Kabir portrays himself like a bride who has gone to her parents house. But having gone there her soul burns from the pangs of separation from her beloved. The bride’s trouble is further complicated because there are no messengers (such as the Sun, Moon, Wind or Water) who can reach and convey her message to the beloved. She has no path or way to solve this problem. Meanwhile the separation is killing her from inside.

Kabir, in his mystical way, is comparing the separation of the individual from the universal self like that of a bride from her beloved. He explains that this insatiable thirst comes from the feeling of separation whose root lies in duality.

He then explains that the only person who can help out of this problem is the Guru. In his final parting signature note, Kabir reveals that the way to reach the beloved is not outside but Inside (similar to a dream-like state) which alone will satisfy the seemingly unending burning thirst.
